Review & Giveaway: Making your Dog a Homemade Meal with Dr. Harvey's Canine Health

Dog food is changing. We are adding more whole foods to our pup's diet and less processed kibble- yay! But where do you start if you want to make the switch? We have introduced you to Dr. Harvey's once before with their Oracle dog food, but this week we are featuring their Canine Health pre-mix dog food!

Dr. Harvey's Fine Health Foods for Companion Animals

Like I have said before, Dr. Harvey's has been around for 30 years providing natural food for dogs, cats, horses, and even birds. Kibble hasn't been around forever and before then dogs were given food from the table. I'm not saying we should go back to exactly how they used to do it, but let's move forward with higher quality food for our companion animals.

"You gonna fill up my bowl or what?"

With Canine Health, you add water, protein, and oil to have a balanced meal for your dog. It is ready in as little as 8 minutes and the hardest part is that your dogs have to wait for their meal, haha! What sets this food apart from others is that it has 6 organic grains and 9 dehydrated vegetables- it is kind of like making your dog a veggie oatmeal. I am not much of a cook at all, but this is a great way of "cooking" your dog a homemade meal. And I mean come on, are your dogs gonna spit it out and say you are a horrible cook? Probably not.

Dr. Harvey's Canine Health Dog Food Ingredients: Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Barley, Organic Triticale, Organic Spelt, Organic Brown Rice, Kamut, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, etc.

Looking at the ingredients you can tell that Canine Health is different that other dog foods. First off, it is a pre-mix, so you add in your own protein and oil. But, there are certified organic grains that are grown right here in the U.S., no preservatives, dyes, artificial ingredients, and nothing is processed.

And you don't have to squint your eyes to see the ingredients either! Just open the bag and observe them yourself.

So the first step in preparing your Canine Health dog food is to scoop out your mix. I am preparing a day's worth of food for Bailey so she would get 1 1/2 scoops since she is 10 lbs. The bag of food comes with a scoop and a pamphlet inside which shows how much to feed depending on the age and weight of your dog.

Hydrating Dr. Harvey's Canine Health

After pouring the mix into a bowl, you get your scoop and add hot water. I used equal parts water, but it depends on the amount you are making. Now comes the hard part for your dogs: waiting 8 minutes for everything to rehydrate!

Measuring the protein for Dr. Harvey's Canine Health

While you are waiting, this is a good time to measure out your protein. You can use raw or cooked beef, chicken, fish, lamb, eggs, tofu - your preference! What is also great is that if your dog has special dietary needs where they can't have a lot of protein, you can use less. (I made some for my rats and was glad that I could do this since they don't need a lot) For Bailey, I used 7 ounces of Evanger's Duck. Dr. Harvey's also recommends rotating proteins every week to make sure your dog gets the right amount of nutrients.

Make sure to rotate proteins when using Dr. Harvey's Canine Health

Adding oil to Dr. Harvey's Canine Health

Once your 8 minutes is up, you can mix your protein with the Canine Health mix and add your choice of oil- canola, hemp, olive, Dr. Harvey's Health & Shine, whichever floats your goat! I used 1 tsp of sunflower oil for Bailey's mix.

Bailey and Dr. Harvey's Canine Health Homemade Dog Food Mix

Mix everything together, portion it out (in this case I divided it into two servings), and voila! Homemade dog food! Our creation probably isn't the prettiest because we used a Pâté-like consistency protein, but honestly does your dog care what it looks like? I highly doubt it.

So did Bailey like Canine Health? She gave it a big paws up! She was really excited to try it and ate it in an eager, but dignified manner licking the bowl clean.

  6. All four of my rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds like fruit and vegetables (in some form). My senior girl, Suki, turned 15 last month and her kidneys are starting to have issues. I know she's like this and it would be perfect for mixing with her regular food, which she isn't eating as much of as she should be.
