ToeGrips have been around since 2011 and are an invention by Dr. Julie Buzby who is a veterinarian who had her own practice, but now lives in South Carolina practicing part-time. She came up with the idea of ToeGrips when one of her furry senior dog clients came to her with rubber rings glued to her nails thanks to the dog’s inventive dad. This got the ball rolling as Dr. Buzby realized that no one else had utilized the nails to get the dog to have more traction.

We actually met Dr. Buzby at BarkWorld 2015! It was great meeting her and her team after chatting so long about doing this review (we actually tried them out before for a social media review)

ToeGrips make dogs happy

So ToeGrips are made out of an engineered material which contains some natural rubber latex. (Do not use if you are allergic to latex, dogs do not have a problem with it though) This is how it works: Part of the grip will touch the ground (this is called the GripZone™) which will give your dog extra oomph when pushing down on the ground to walk around or get up from the floor. 

There are sizes from XS to XXXL. To figure out what size your pooch needs, take some dental floss and wrap it around the widest nail. Mark it with a marker, unwrap, and then measure how long it is from one mark to another. This is the nail circumference. Use the guide on the ToeGrips website to get the size for the grips.

Once you get your ToeGrips in the mail, put 16 (one for each nail) in some rubbing alcohol. This helps slide it on and dries quickly. For Jake, we got the green large grips. According to our vet, he suffers from a bad back which causes some instability when he walks and gets worse when he is extremely active. He is around 13 years old so he fits the senior category, but he is still pretty active for his age so he isn’t the completely ideal ToeGrips candidate. These are made for dogs who lead an inactive lifestyle, but can be used for younger dogs if they are recovering from surgery or in rehab.

They are actually pretty easy to put on! Just support your dog’s paw and slide it on the nail. I used my fingernail to get it in the right diagonal position and it didn’t take me long to get them on all 4 paws. Make sure that your pup’s nails are trimmed beforehand and trim any hair that could prevent the ToeGrips from touching the floor. I like to make this process as easy as possible by having some yummy treats to reward with!

So I know what you all are wondering…do they really work? We have tried these on two separate occasions and I gotta say there is a difference! It might be hard to tell because Jake isn’t too bad off at all, but he is definitely more confident when he walks around and he can get up quicker from a laying down position. Once you have applied ToeGrips to your dog, check them every day to make sure that they haven’t come off or moved up the nail. They will last 1-3 months depending on the amount of wear. If they frequently come off you could use super glue to attach them, but I would first consider why they pop off. The number one reason is that the grips are the wrong size. Alternatively, your pup might be too active and thus not an ideal candidate.
