VetriScience has been around since 1972 and specializes in supplements made by veterinarians for veterinarians to improve your pet's health. Their parent company, Food Science Corporation, also owns some human supplement brands as well as Pet Naturals of Vermont. This Vermont-based company is on the cutting edge in the effective ingredients they use for their supplemental products.
We met them at BlogPaws this year and we just loved them! We were very impressed with the ingredients in their products and we are doing a couple of product reviews to introduce the brand to The Chesnut Mutts readers- a.k.a. you! So to start off, we will be looking at their Perio Support dental health supplement.
VetriScience Perio Support
Dental health is so important for our beloved pets because it affects other organs like heart, kidneys, and lungs. A very high percentage of dogs and cats have poor dental health and this is typical because brushing them is not a priority for pet parents.
According to our vet, it is advised to brush them with an enzymatic toothpaste before your pets go to bed at night. I would recommend using supplements like Perio to help with reducing plaque and bad breath, plus to get your pet on the right track when it comes to overall dental health.
When it comes to supplements, I expect a lot of big words in the ingredient list! Let's break down some of these and find out their purpose...
Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Natural Zeolites
Zeolite is a mineral that is used commonly as an odor absorbent. In the pet industry, you can find it in cat litter and aquarium filters. In this supplement, it helps prevent plaque formation.Cranberry Extract
Besides Urinary Tract Infection relief and antioxidant qualities, cranberries are also used as a deodorizer and prevents plaque build up on the teeth and tissue destruction.Yucca Schidigera Extract
Yucca Schdigera is a desert plant that is found in a lot of pet food nowadays because of its deodorizing properties on pet stool. In this supplement, it helps prevent gum problems.
Lactobacillus Acidophilus
Enterococcus Faecium
These are both bacteria that help with restoring microbial balance in your pet's mouth.
Anise Oil
Besides giving the supplement a licorice smell, Anise has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties for oral health.
So the powder is very light and is a whiteish color with a slight licorice smell because of the Anise Oil. According to the instructions, dogs and cats up to 15 lbs get 1/4 tsp per meal.
The girls did not have any problem with the supplement and ate their food happily as usual. We continued adding Perio to their morning and evening meals every day for over 30 days to see how much of a difference it would make.
"yum!" |
The amount of plaque had not increased and her breath was a lot better! The purpose of this product is to reduce plaque formation and to maintain clean teeth and breath, so it did the trick! I would still brush your dog's teeth every day, but as prevention and a breath freshener, I would recommend Perio!
Now, we didn't try this out on the cats, but I have no doubt that Perio would yield results for them as well!

Nala isn't one who likes her teeth being brushed so to try and keep her teeth clean we give her dental chews and the occasional raw meaty bone to help her teeth stay clean this looks like a great addition to keep up her dental health.
ReplyDeleteGreat job, Amy! Good luck!
DeleteHey! I brush Axel's teeth once a week, but I moved to another house and I put his toothbrush and paste somewhere in a box I can't find. I haven't brush his teeth in a long while and now he has a bad breath. I'm taking him to the vet to brush his teeth. Hopefully I'll find his stuff someday. :(
ReplyDeleteOh no! I hope you find it too!
DeleteI have four rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds who simply do NOT like having me brush their teeth. I have tried some sprays and gel I put on their teeth, and give them dental chews, but I need something to really get rid of the tartar.
ReplyDeleteAfter I made this post I started brushing everyday and that has made the most difference. I would definitely introduce them to the brush very slowly and give them a reward- toy or treat for every step of progress!
DeleteDo we brush everyday - no, but we Do have doggie tooth paste, gels, drink additives, brushes and even dental scrapers which they are pretty darn good for. We need to get more in the habit of frequent brushing. Our girls love chewing on nylabones though. But this, this is very interesting!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mallory! I have used dental scrapers and that helped at first, but of course it comes back if you don't fix the problem in the first place, haha. I am glad you are taking steps to help their teeth!
DeleteI have never brushed a dogs teeth before. None of the dogs I have had has ever had teeth problems.
ReplyDeleteDental health is very important, if your vet says their teeth are fine then that's great, but I would still rather be safe than sorry. Dental surgery is more expensive than a dog toothbrush and toothpaste.
DeleteI don't brush my cat's teeth every day but I do take him for dental checkups and cleanings at the vet.
ReplyDeleteWell that's great! So many cat owners do nothing for their teeth, so you got a step up from them! ;)
DeleteWe try to brush regularly, but need to get in the habit of a daily brushing.
ReplyDeleteI understand, I finally got in the habit just recently :)
DeleteI don't brush my cats teeth because I know that she would not let me
ReplyDeleteYou can always start out with finger brushes! That makes it easier to get used to :)
Deletei tried to brush my dogs teeth but there not cooperative
ReplyDeleteTry one step at a time. Reward them for seeing it, for being near it, for it being near their face, etc.!
DeleteI've tried but she doesn't like the toothpaste. I've asked the home where I live to buy new paste but they haven't as of yet.
ReplyDeleteAw, well my vet recommends C.E.T. Enzymatic toothpaste. We will be getting some soon :)
DeleteThey will not let me so I give them dental chews but they need help
ReplyDeleteGoing little by little helps! Dental chews are great :)
DeleteI brush sometimes but not every day.
ReplyDeletesometimes is better than no times! :)
Deleteyes, i try to brush them everyday. i use this powder now and have been for a very long time. it works ver well. we go to a dental specialist every 3 mos or so for my 3 gals.
ReplyDeleteSo awesome! :D
DeleteNo we don't brush their teeth every day. We do try to brush them once a month and we will buy the treats for the teeth.
ReplyDeleteI used to only do it once a month and we still had problems. I would recommend brushing more often :)
DeleteWe try to brush regularly but unfortunately not every day.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is hard to remember! I keep the toothbrush near the door and brush right before I let them out one last time to potty.
DeleteI brush Layla's teeth daily but also give her bones to chew on - her teeth are pearly white
ReplyDeleteAwesome job!!! :D
DeleteHe's not my dog, but I've never really brushed a dog's teeth before either.
ReplyDeleteI would ask and see if they brush their dog' teeth and tell them how important it is :)
DeleteOur dogs hate getting their teeth brushed! We tend to give them dental chews and get their teeth brushed at the groomer. This product looks like a great addition to their daily meal plan!
ReplyDeleteAll it takes is baby steps and the right motivation ;). It definitely is a great addition- I didn't miss Bailey's dog breath at all! Haha.
DeleteWe try to brush our dog's teeth when we can, but should do it more!
ReplyDeleteOf course! Your dog will thank you in the long run :)
DeleteYup- I want to keep their teeth as healthy as possible for as long as possible. Shiloh is almost 6, and has almost no plaque at all!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome, Kate!! Keep it up :D
DeleteWe brush our dogs' teeth each week and we give them dental treats.
