Raw and homemade dog foods are becoming quickly becoming a trend in the dog food industry. For me, my main qualms with switching to this kind of food is messing up the ratios somehow with my dog ending up lacking the right amount of nutrients, and how long it takes to prepare can be an issue. I know if I put my mind to it I could probably conquer raw and homemade foods, but right now let's take it one step at a time.
A company that is known for it's homemade dog food mixes is Dr. Harvey's. We learned about them in a BlogPaws Chat on Twitter and won some of their treats (which my girls loved!) We also met them at the BlogPaws convention and Delmar told them how much he loved their Coconut Smiles treats.

Dr. Harvey's has been around for 30 years changing the the minds of people by telling them that companion animals need better and more natural food. They have many varieties and sell products for dogs, cats, birds, and horses. This week we are trying out their Oracle dog food, which is like their homemade "just add water" food, but with the protein already added in. Talk about convenience!
Here is a short video from Dr. Harvey's about Oracle:

For dogs, they have tripe, chicken, and beef, with grain-free options for each. And for cats they have chicken, fish, and beef, with grain-free options as well.
Since we love weird proteins over here, I decided to try the tripe recipe! (and Jada couldn't eat it because of her allergies so Bailey stepped up to bat!)
So here is a trial size version of Dr. Harvey's Oracle in freeze-dried tripe. This bag should feed a 12-15 pound dog for one day with two servings.
Bask in the amazing ingredient list! Wow!! Love, love, love it! What makes it even better is that is is made in the U.S.A. with 100% natural whole foods with added vitamins and minerals. No chemical additives, wheat, corn, or soy as well!
Ok, so first you have to pour the amount of Oracle needed into your dog's bowl. Since I was giving Bailey (10 lbs) one serving I poured out half of the trial bag. Here is a feeding chart to help you get an idea of how much you would feed. 1 cup of Oracle is approximately 4 oz.

The second step is to add hot water. I added in a little less than a half cup for Bailey's amount, but you can use chart above to figure out the amount you would use for your dog.
After pouring in the hot water, you wait for 10-12 minutes, stirring occassionally, or until the food is completely rehydrated. (Lookie at all the ingredients you can pick out in the picture! neat!)
"Ready yet, mama?" |
Once Oracle is rehydrated, it has the consistency of oatmeal (which makes since, since it contains rolled oats)
Time for the taste test! Now, Bailey is a picky eater so I wasn't surprised that she kind of turned her nose at the bowl at first, but she came back to it once I hand-fed her a piece of the tripe. (as shown in the video below)
"Omnom!" |
Bailey seemed to thoroughly enjoy the food and ate a good bit, but didn't finish it all. (She likes to transistion to new food slowly, which is no problem with me). So Dottie came in and ate the rest and tried to eat the bowl in the process, haha.

I really liked this food and how easy it was to prepare! It is nice to actually see the ingredients of the food you are feeding your dog- especially with how high quality they are. If you are feeding raw or dehydrated food this is a great addition to add to your dog food cupboard or take with you when you are traveling. Honestly, this is some of the best food I have come across. I do wish it was a bit cheaper, but Dr. Harvey's doesn't skimp out on quality ingredients, so you get what you paid for! :)
